RandstadRail

RandstadRail is a light rail connection between Rotterdam, Den Haag and Zoetermeer. Lightrail is a hybrid of tram, train and metro and the vehicles can run on both train and metro lines as well on the tram network. Since the vehicles are light, they accelerate much faster than their heavier counterparts and the stops at the stations are shorter. Travelling times with light rail are also shorter than those of other types of rail transport.

RET and RandstadRail
RET manage RandstadRail transport in the Rotterdam area. Our service is based on the RandstadRail Erasmus line (metro line E) which connects the Rotterdam Hofplein and Den Haag Centraal stations. The HTM company manages RandstadRail transport in the Haaglanden area

New lightrail vehicles
We now operate metro line E with new vehicles. These metro fast trams are 42 metres long and they weigh more than 60 tonnes. The trams are built by the train builder Bombardier Transportation in Bautzen, Germany. In total, 22 of these new vehicles are delivered.

Lightrail in the future
Direct rail link to Den Haag Centraal

From 2010, it will be possible to travel directly from the heart of Rotterdam to the centre of Den Haag. This involves constructing a connection between the current RandstadRail Erasmuslijn and the metro Erasmuslijn. In mid 2010, the first test- and trial runs will begin. By the end of 2010, our passengers will be able to travel directly from Rotterdam Centraal station to the centre of Den Haag. And from 2010 onwards, it will also be possible to travel uninterrupted (without changing) from metro station Slinge to Den Haag Centraal.

Improved station accessibility

The stations of Wilgenplas and Hofplein are old NS stations without lifts and ramps. Wilgenplas station will be replaced by a new station called Meijersplein. At the end of 2009, Hofplein station will also close as soon as the underground line to Rotterdam Centraal is in operation. Rail travel for disabled people will then be much better.
