Public transport must be accessible to everyone. In this respect, RET has made various arrangements. Here you can read about exactly what we’ve done. RET does much to make public transport accessible to everyone.
What sort of things have we done?
Lifts, ramps and escalators
To increase the accessibility of our metro stations, virtually all of Rotterdam’s stations are equipped with ramps, lifts and escalators with the exception of two RandstadRail stations (Hofplein and Wilgenplas). Before you set off, we advise you to check online whether or where work on the network is scheduled or taking place. This will allow you to select another beforehand route if necessary. Of course, you can always obtain advice and information about your journey directly by contacting a member of RET’s staff.
Wheel chair friendly bus and tramlines
Several RET bus and tramlines are accessible to wheel chair users. On these routes, we operate the special Citaro-buses and Citadis-trams which have lower floors. You can recognise these bus and tramlines by the wheel chair sticker placed at these stops.
Reserved seats
For passengers who have difficulties walking, we have reserved special seats with more space.
- In trams, two seats are reserved behind the driver.
- In buses, you’ll typically find seats for people with a disability at the front. These seats are indicated by a sticker.
- Unfortunately, however, we are unable to accommodate ‘scoot mobiles’ (i.e., electric wheel chairs) on our buses.
But we do more!
RET does much more to make public transport accessible to everyone. Read the brochure ‘Travelling with a disability’. There, we describe all the facilities that are available on buses, trams and metros as well those at stops and stations. The brochure answers questions such as:
- What should a wheelchair user do if he/she wants to travel by bus, tram or metro?
- What services or facilities are available for the blind or partially sighted?
- Which lines and stops are accessible for passengers with a disability?

- RET Servicewinkel , Laan op Zuid 2, Rotterdam.
- RET Sales & Information point.
- St. Mee, Schiedamse Vest.
Do you have any suggestions about how we can improve the information in the brochure? If so, then please contact us.
Travelling with pushchairs
In RET buses and trams, special spaces are reserved for (a maximum of one or two) fold-away pushchairs and/or buggies. They must not, however, cause inconvenience for other passengers.
Passenger regulations:
- A fold-away pushchair/buggy may only be placed in the reserved space allocated for that purpose.
- A child may remain seated in his or her pushchair/buggy providing that it is secured with a safety belt.
- Apply the brake on the pushchair/buggy.
- On Citadis-trams, there is space for two pushchairs/buggies behind the seats at the back. You can enter through the rear doors.
- In the standard trams (the old type), there is only room for one pushchair or buggy. The third door from the front is the entrance for passengers with pushchairs etc.
- In RET-buses, there will be enough space for your buggy or pushchair. With smaller pushchairs, you can enter through the door at the front. Otherwise, you must use the rear door.
- Metro doors that are suitable for buggies and pushchairs are indicated by the wheel chair sticker.
Is the reserved space occupied?
The tram/bus driver or conductor may ask you to fold up the pushchair. Please comply with this request. Otherwise, they have the right to refuse your entry. Because only then can the safety of our passengers be guaranteed.
